Lower unit leaking fluid

I have a 1996 model 15 Hp Mercury that has recently started leaking dope from around the hub at the prop. It is the color of coffee with cream added. When I spin the prop by hand I can't hear any gears grinding and it seems to spin freely. I have just noticed some sort of faint popping noise while runing at idle speed -- or maybe I'm just paranoid. I have always kept the fluid topped off but have never completely changed the fluid. The motor only has about 150-200 hours on it. I had a prop strike on a rock shoal not long ago, but it didn't destroy the aluminum prop -- only some dings. Do I just have a leaking seal or bigger problems? I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Shad Lips, You'll need to pull the prop and inspect propshaft for damage. You can determine whether it is bent by performing runout with dial indicator. If runout is good simply replace propshaft seal and flush and change lower unit oil.I recommend getting a manual if you are not familiar with procedure.

milky oil is a sign of water in the L.U.
however, since you havent changed it, Thats not a very accurate way to determine if you have a leak.
I would drain the oil and pressure test it, it should hold 15psi without leaking.
