Engine is a 1989 Yamaha ProV 150.

Recently found LU gear lube on the ground.

Traced it up to a weep hole of sorts on the port side of the LU. I'm suspecting the gear shaft oil seal(s) under the water pump finally let go.

I would like to know:

1. What parts I should order? Any kits?
2. Best way to take the old seals out - any special tools?
3. Best way to install the new seals - any special tools?
4. Best way to position the seal lips when installing?
5. If this is something I can do or leave it to a pro?

Also, should I let a pro replace ALL seals or just replace the one on the dgear/drive shaft?

Thanks for any and all help!!

Re: Lower Unit leaking lube

You will need some special tools to take apart the gearcase. The age of the engine would make me want to reseal the entire case. This is not a tough job for a mechanic with experience and the proper tools.

Re: Lower Unit leaking lube

Thanks guys.

I'll drop the LU next weekend and assess but I'm pretty sure that the 2 seals around the gear shaft have finally worn out. I drained (oil and water) and refilled with fresh lube to hopefully salvage the internals and to keep rust at bay. Still leaking through the weep hole though.... No oil was leaking out of the prop shaft area as I'm contsantly looking there to make sure that no lines are wrapped up in there.

I know that I need to hammer/drive out the impeller woodruff key on the shaft and take the water pump base plate (with gasket) off. From that point on will be all new territory for me hence what parts I should get?

Thanks again!
