I have a 2006 Yamaha 50TLR 2 Stroke w/ aluminum prop.

When i have it running w/ the garden hose on it and if it is in Foward or Reverse at idle speed i hear chattering in the lower unit. If i give it throttle you do not hear it. If it is in Nuetral i do not hear any noise.

Is it backlash from not having the boat in water and no pressure on the prop?

Is this normal?

Thanks in advance

Check that the prop nut is not loose ;) , check oil levels in gear case.

I can't remember which message board I found a similar post about noise in the lower unit, while on muffs, while in gear!

I read that this is normal due to the fact that there is no load on the prop. I know mine does it too. Google it and you will get numerous hits from other message boards regarding this type of question.

There's no real reason to put motor in gear while running on muffs to flush it, and it creates a hazard in the spinning prop area. Any noise in gear that way is probably normal from gear clatter/prop turning. Don't cut your leg off!

Its normal I wouldn't worry about it. My motor does it loud enough to make you cringe. Just check lower unit oil for metal. If there's nothing more than the usual tiny particles on the lower magnet screw you're good.
