I have a 2005 Mercury 50 ELPTO 2 Stroke w/ aluminum prop.

When i have it running w/ the garden hose on it and if it is in Foward or Reverse at idle speed i hear chattering in the lower unit. If i give it throttle you do not hear it. If it is in Nuetral i do not hear any noise.

Is it backlash from not having the boat in water and no pressure on the prop?

Is this normal?

Thanks in advance

Why are you running it in gear out of the water. ?

It should not be chattering from my experience. Take the prop off and run it and see if that makes a difference, and inspect the shaft for crud and fishing line that the prop might be rubbing on. You should not run it in gear above an idle on muffs, and really not a good idea period with the prop on. You will also run the risk of damage since the prop doesn't have water to slow the prop spin down before you shift it, making damage to the clutch dog likely.
It could be something in the pinion teeth, etc. A lower unit oil drain/ check as mentioned above would be a good idea. Last of all, I'm no professional mechanic, but I've owned and repaired lots of motors, and mine don't have any chattering in gear on muffs. Just take that in consideration when reading my post---I could be wrong.

Good post jbjennings :D:D

That unit will clatter as it has the non-racheting clutch dog and the fluctuating engine rpm will cause it to clack as it cannot slip like the older dogs can

I got noise on my motor too, but out on the water.
Only when I first try to put it in reverse. Makes this clicking ticking noise. But goes away as soon as I go past I go past a certain distance on the throttle when reversing.

It's only on the intial reserve.
