Lower unit not sealing?

Hello all.

Once again I come seeking wisdom, understanding and knowledge and thank you in advance for your consideration.

Working on re-sealing the lower unit of a 1999 Johnson 200hp Ocean Runner 2 stroke J200PLEEN. I was informed on another thread that the lower unit is not the same year as this motor. And as far as I can determine it appears to be from a 1989 or older model. It worked fine with this motor until it developed a leak.

When I disassembled the unit I took the carrier bearing housing (fits around the prop shaft) to a machine shop to have the seals removed and new ones pressed in.

I left them a seal kit and gasket sealer with instructions to coat the outsides of the new seals when installing.

Now, after re-assembly and pressure testing, the seals at the front around the prop shaft are leaking. I removed the carrier again and it seems the shop didn’t press the seals in far enough and it looks like they didn’t use the sealer around the outer edges of the rings.

This is an automotive machine shop that has done good work for me in the past but there are some new people working there.

I’m going to take the carrier out again and trying to decide what to do. Don’t know whether to take it back to the shop and see if they can remove the bearings, coat and re install?

Because I didn’t get a chance to inspect the carrier when the seals were out I don’t know if the housing is damaged and not allowing a tight seal?

I don’t think I have a puller small enough to get the seals out or I’d try myself.

Any ideas or comments appreciated.

Thanks

rob

I have not worked on your unit, but those seals are generally easy to drive out with a punch or screwdriver. That ruins them of course.

New seals can be driven in with an appropriate-sized socket and hammer. Permatex #3 (aviation) sealer works pretty good on the seals. Grease the shafts before reassembly.

Might be something I have to do. Trying to get this fixed without buying another seal kit but it doesn't look promising.
Wonder if the machine shop might be able to get them out without damage?
Thanks for your response.

Facts-----Those seals can be pried out with a hefty screwdriver.-----Careful not to score the carrier housing.------I have installed the factory seals many a time with no sealer and NO LEAKS.-----Put grease BETWEEN the seals when assembling.----New O-rings on those 4 screws that hold the carrier.

OK,
So it seems that either the seals weren't pressed in far enough or the carrier housing is damaged.
Could there be something else I'm missing?
If the seals weren't pressed in far enough is it too late to press them in further?

No just push them in ( socket & hammer ) till the outside one is flush with housing.-----This is a simple job.----Nothing magic about installing seals.---Any pictures of the seals in this housing now ?

Couldn't figure out whether it was the seals or the housing, so I took the entire lower unit to a marine shop that I've done business with before.
They didn't like the way the seals looked so they took the old seals out, put in new ones and pressure tested .
Turns out the carrier housing was bad. Somewhere along the way someone goobered it up so it wouldn't seal around the outside edge of the seal.
Lucky to find one on ebay. Ordered and waiting for arrival.
Will post back.
thanks
