Hey y'all! My vacation has been interupted by an over heating motor. I change the thermostat and that helped for a second, but taxi'n on out of the cove it started over heating again. So now I'm going to attempt my first impeller change. Any advise? It's a merc 140 with the MC1 drive (1981). Also my unit oil is
green. I just changed it back in may. Emulsification? Kinda seemed weird.

Re: Lower unit oil green?

Well I got the impeller swapped out. It's fairly simple; worst part was lining everything back up. I took extra care to make sure all the gaskets were in place and ever nut and bolt was in place and sealed up. So hopefully that will take care of the oilly water mix, but for now it's runnin cool at 160* and it's time for a test run:)
PS: noticed that since it's running cooler the oil pressure is up and the idle is smoother. *bonus*

Howdy,

You're hoping up the wrong tree. A raw water pump has NOTHING to do with a drive that is leaking.

If you actually do have a leak and you continue to run it that way, you'll eventually be replacing the drive when it seizes.

Hey just run the drive and check it once in a while. Green drive oil is fine. Milky drive oil is expensive unless fixed right away. If you can't pressure test your drive you can drain & check the drive oil after it's been run.

Re: Lower unit oil green?

Well I rechecked the oil today and so far it looks pretty normal after about 3'hours of run time. What's the trick to finding the leak? When I replaced the impeller I got the kit the replaces all the plastic parts and seals and gaskets. I did finda a rubber oring with a spring just kinda sitting on the lowere drive shaft. Couldn't tell where it came from. Is this causing the leak?

the base of water pump is where your leak woud be so if you replaced it you probably fixed it
