lower unit oil or grease?

i have a 1959 evinrude 18hp and a 1970 evinrude 18hp. th 59 takes grease in the lower unit and the 70 take 80-90 oil .can i put 80-90 in the one that has grease in it nowor will that hurt it? thanks george

Both motors use SAE90 outboard gear oil or your 80-90.Someone probably put grease in the 59 because the seals are shot.

That is correct. And if you don't want worn out pinion bearings, it would be wise to put the proper lube in the '59. If it leaks, fix the seals. The pinion bearing cannot be replaced.
