lower unit oil question

I just got a 1968(?) mercury 6hp, and when i checked the lower unit oil nothing came out. I tried to fill it, but after about 5 ounces it stopped filling but didn't come out the top hole. How much oil should be needed to fill it? The motor runs, but it concerns me that there was no oil in the lower unit.

Re: lower unit oil question

Sounds like you removed the flush plug to vent the case, the vent screw is a smaller screw that is just above the cavitation plate and goes in at a 45 degree angle

Re: lower unit oil question

your on the right track fill it up till it runs out of the top hole dont forget when you change the oil. also change the seals in both plugs there very cheap but after being tightened then loosened up the seals may not seat well again. use the proper oil the lower unit calls for. there is a difference. your book should tell you this
