Hello All !

New here and this seems to be a great place.

I have a question. I know nothing about boat motors and I bought a 1975 mercury 9.8 hp. I found out from reading old post why it was not squiring out water and went and bought a new impeller (works great now BTW).

My questin is, someone told me I need to make sure theres oil in the lower unit? How do I check and fill?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Lower unit oil

1. Get a lower unit lube change kit...Wal-Mart or some place like that. It's a length of plastic hose with threads on one end, and a simple hand pump on the other. Should run you no more than 8 or 9 bucks. Get a bottle of lower unit oil.

2. There's two oil screws on the lower unit. Remove the lower one (should be a BIG flat-head screw) and drain the old stuff out into a pan.

3. Remove the upper screw. Attach the threaded end of the kit hose to the lower screw opening, and screw the pump into the bottle of oil. Pump the lube in until it starts coming out of the upper hole. Voila.

Re: Lower unit oil

Thanks all.

I do have one question though. I see the lower small screw (just below where the lower end came apart). The upper big screw I think you are talking about has "flush" labeled under it. Is this where the oil should come out?

Thanks

Re: Lower unit oil

Lower screw should be located below and behind the prop...the upper screw directly above it a few inches.
