Hey guys just wondering what oil is my best option to use when changing my lower unit oil for the first time on a newly purchased boat.

Its a 1990 90 Horse Johnson

Thanks

Re: Lower unit oil

This is a wide open topic that a lot of people have opinions about. I have used Super-Tech 80w 90 marine gear lube from Wal-Mart for years with excellent results. I currently use it in a 1997 Evinrude 90. Super-Tech may, or may not, be the answer for you. I would suggest that you find a good MARINE gear lube, that's readily available where you live and boat, and go with it.
Cheers!

Just ensure it is marine gear oil. Do not forget to change the gaskets!

Lots of youtube videos if you want to watch it done.

Re: Lower unit oil

I just purchase a quart of Pennzoil lower unit lube at WalMart for less than $6. Having a pump to install it simplifies the job and makes it cleaner.

I ignored my lower unit on a 1985 Yamaha 115 hp 2 stroke, and water intrusion toasted my bearings/gears. Before you add the new lower unit lube, have your gearbox both pressure and vacuum tested by a qualified marine mechanic. This is a matter of preventive maintenance that needs to be done every couple of years--and on any newly purchased used boat.

I'm guilty of bad maintenance, and I'm having to pay the price--monthly payments on a new Bennington. I figured I got 26 years of great use out of my motor, so I don't feel that bad. Just be careful and take care of your gearbox.
