lower unit oil

I need input on what lower unit oil I should use on my evinrude 150 intruder. The dealer recomends the evinrude oil because it mixes with water just in case some water might find it's way into the lower unit. This stuff is bucks and one bottle isn't enough fill the lower unit. There must be something out there just as good as the evinrude and be reasonably priced...

If you think the oil is high, price any one of the parts that go in that gearcase. Use the correct oil.

or ... read the oil spec off the lube tube, or your manual (of course, you have one!) and shop around for same spec oil elsewhere.

A 33oz bottle of Evinrude's Ultra HPF gear lube is less than $10, and you change it once a year. It is a semi-synthetic that still lubricates better than any hypoid 90, even when mixed with 10% water.

not to start an old debate up but I had to use Supra gear case lube (Only thing available at 1am) when I swapped cases. Am I doomed?

Mac

Any gear lube is better than none.

I have all types of gear lube at the shop, so I can change as often and as easily as anyone. I use an automotive synthetic gear lube and they have all the water protection and anti-foaming additives you could want. However i wouldnt use an automotive regular gear lube unless it was an imergency and then i would get it out as soon as I could.

There has been a lot of debate on this subject, and there is never anything wrong with using the manufactures oil, however, there are alturnatives that work just fine, and in some cases actually better.

OK, ask me to prove it!! Like how???

I can't understand why one would try to save a buck or two on the oil that goes into either the grarcase or the gas tank. I just checked iboats on the price of a new 150 - They have a couple of Yammys at a tad over $10,000.00??? Like many folks here I watch what I spend and look for "deals". Oil ain't one of them.

I wasn't looking for a deal, I had to get the trailer back first thing in the AM and when I installed my new gear case and found out it was empty, 24hr Wall-mart's the only place to get gear oil at 1am in my town. It was all they had on the shelf.

That is why I am worried about my new gear case.

Mac

Mac - You should be just fine - I would however change the gear oil again with the known "good stuff". Maybe I'm just a bit anal about this.

Thanksto everyone for the input on oil for the lower unit. Wal-Mart sells a Penzoil lower unit oil, I think it's 100% synthetic well under 5.00 a quart. What do you think?
