lower unit on 110 johnson

i removed all bolts on lower unit and disengaged shift linkage...still wont drop <br /> marine mackanic says may need to cut shaft to remove ...????id rather try something less drastic aany help would be appreciated.jj

I posted this once before, I never heard wheather it worked for him or not. I was told once how to get one loose that I was having the same problem with,I took this with a grain of salt but tried it anyway;it worked. I've never had the opertunity to try this again,so maybe that was just a fluke. The problem was that the splines get worn and shift into the splines in the powerhead not letting the drive shaft slide out. What I did was to cross two spark plug wires, and tried to start it making it backfire, this helped me. It's worth a try before cutting the driveshaft,then you still have to get the other end out of the powerhead.<br />Lots of luck

is there any thing else i have to lossen,,, that i may have forgot,,,, 1989 johnson shaft had been replace before,,, shaft was sheared off ..... 6 bolts and linkage should this be all i need to drop it .... if not please advise ...jj

There seems to always be another bolt. I had the same problem recently and went back to the manual again and found the last bolt. <br /><br />Keep looking.

Hi JJ.<br />There are a lot of things to try before you think about cutting. Do a serch of this board and you will find this subject has a lot of good ideas. You will need a good deal of patience and persistance.

yes,,,under trim pad one larger bolt next to that and 4 bbotls two each on either side,,,<br /> than linkage itried spark plug backfire still sstuck..

if it drops at all, it means you got all the bolts out. If it drops 1/2" or better, it means you probably are hanging up on the shifter shaft. If it drops only slightly, try this.....<br />

it dropped about half an inch with prying and woo d wedges still stuck,,,,cracked the housing now,,,is this repairable,,, stubborn.... seems very sloppy when i wiggle it....just wont drop//boat to low to try the pulling device,,,,was looking at new motors....what is the equivlent to<br /> 110 hp.. in honda motorsor yamaha...saw a two strok3 e 90 hpjohnson..boat package 13000 four winns not giving in yet .....jj

tilt the engine up to get slide hammer on if needed.<br />>are you sure the end of the shifter shaft is free from the linkage?<br /><br />(housings can be welded)

Try this.....<br /><br />>remove the prop<br />>install your wedges good and tight just above the trim tab area<br />>crank the engine(pull lanyard so it won't start)<br /><br />If you side load the driveshaft and crank the engine, the splines may loosen.<br /><br />good luck

SHIFTER IS DISENGAGED,,,,,PUTTING A LANDSCAPE TIMBER ALONG THE SKEG PART OF FIN LENGTH WISE I WACKED IT SEVERAL TIMES..WITH ONE LAST WACK ,,, IT DROPPED,,, GO FIGURE,,I GUESS IF I HAD TWO PEOPLE DOING THE SAME THING IT WOULD OF DROPPED ,,,ALSO THAT DEVICE YOU HAD MADE UP WOULD OF PROBEBLY WORKED,,TOO,,THANKS FOR ALL YOUR IMFO...NOW I NEED TO FIND A WELDER TO FIX HOUSING...THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP..JJ<br />SPLINE DOSENT SEEM TO HAVE TO MUCH WERE BUT HAD NO GREASE,,,,

Take the housing to a prop repair shop. They'll have the expertise to precisionly weld the housing...
