Can anyone tell me how much backlash there should be between the pinion gear and the forward or reverse gear. Working on a 1971 Mod400 40hp with remote. Drive shaft, which pinion gear is attached to, moves up or down about a 1/16 of an inch. When water pump is finally mounted will this slop be removed? Question is: How is the drive shaft locked into position and adjusted for backlass to the forward or reverse gears?<br />Thank.<br />Roger2
