Lower Unit Paint

I would like to touch up the paint on my lower unit, particularly the skag?? I believe that is what the lowest part is called. The part in front of and under the prop.

We beached the boat for an overnight camping trip and it must have been rubbing in the sand. Most of the paint is now gone and the rest of it could use a little touch up work anyway.

Any recommendations on prep work and what paint to use??

It is a Bravo 3 unit.

Thanks

Yup - pretty simple actually. First off prep the area really good. Buy a can of zinc chromate ( spray ) and prime ( light coats, not heavy ). Then go to your Merc dealer and get a can of touch up spray. Try not to do this on a rainy day. The paint will absorb the moisture from the air and "fog" the finish coat.
Called a skeg.

One more thing you may want to do is to use a couple of halogen work lamps on each side of the lower unit after painting and you will help to bake on the paint. About two to three hours will help to really dry and complete that paint job.

From a fellow hater of boogered up paint----if I used the boat regularly (and I bet you do), you might want to get used to the paint being scuffed on the lower unit-----it happens. And it's going to keep happening. But as said, the primer is the key. And super good tip on the humid day no-no. I'd mist the first coat and second coat of primer.
Good luck! You're gonna need it to keep paint on that skeg:D
