Lower Unit Problem Need Solved!

Hi to all, I have a 1968 Chrysler 55hp Model #5571 and have creamy tan lower unit oil. I know the next step is to replace all lower unit seals but wondering what seal kit I would need and what website has the best prices usually? Do they come with the drain/vent plug gaskets as well?

Also, could somebody give me a link or procedure that tells me how to remove the lower unit and disassemble it?

Here are my symptoms:
-creamy tan lower gear unit oil
-replaced shift control cable
-with the old shift cable, it seemed it was getting sticky and sometimes wouldn't engage in forward/reverse
-with the new shift cable installed, I noticed that while I'm trying to put it in forward or reverse, the shift rod bounces up and down right at the point I feel it should be plopping into gear...it makes a loud rattling noise which causes the shift rod to jump up and down, sometimes it jolts into gear and sometimes just revs up without going into gear.

Anybody have any ides what could cause this?...I need this problem solved since I'm trying to sell the boat and refuse to hand my problems off onto the next person...If I do need lower gear unit parts, what site or business would have these parts? Should I just buy a whole lower unit used or take apart lower unit first?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out with any/all of the questions above.

Re: Lower Unit Problem Need Solved!

1. Most of your needs have been answered here, searches or a manual will lead you to answers.

2. Please give some previous history of performance and up-keep before this prepping to sale.

3. Check the FAQ at the top for of the post for some lower unit info. Quick L/U tasks can be challenging.

4. Check my latest efforts at the addresses below related (that are in searches with the key words).

5. Prepping to sale vs to keep, another L/U or a shop or donation might be your best option.

6. Hopefully someone will share some better/quick info but I feel it will take some research/experiments/options.

Good luck!

Re: Lower Unit Problem Need Solved!

When you put solved in the header I thought it was fixed!!!!
Maybe change the wording,Sometimes I'm not too bright!

1.Drain and pressure test.Could be as simple as a screws gasket??
Or the seals have gone. To do it right you need to remove the lower and test all areas.
Too much air pressure will blow the seals if they aren't bad now.
2.They need to be adjusted while in neutral.Install the cable in the shifter first.
Then install the cable on the motor.Sounds like it needs more adjusting.
Maybe too much cable at one end or the other?

Parts are all over the net.
If the housing is in good shape then the seals can be had at Franz Marine.
or Valley sales in Prudenville,Mi.

Fill out profile,location.
You might be close to someone who can help??
