lower unit problems

First post here so please bear with me. I have a 1992 mercury 150 black max that I am currently having the lower unit rebuilt on. I have the small gearcase on this and I was told by the mechanic that it was not a very reliable gearcase and that is why they stopped producing this type of gearcase. So my question is should I purchase the larger gearcase for my outboard and if so would it be more reliable? I mainly use this boat to fish from, but do plan to do some water skiing also.Any replies and input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: lower unit problems

Welcome to iboats.

The smaller gearcase was for performance purposes. Less gearcase to drag thru the water, thus more speed. I haven't heard about any reliability issues from either gearcase, but if it was powering a big boat rated for more than 150Hp, I'd rather have the big gearcase so I could run the bigger prop. That's the only reason.

Re: lower unit problems

I have it on a 18' Nitro running a 23p 4 blade ss prop. A 150hp is the max hp rating for this boat.As far as the reliability thats just what I have been told buy two seperate mechanics.Any how it is being totally rebuilt.I appreciate the info, that puts my mind and not to mention my wallet more at ease!
