lower unit problems

I have a mid 80 in line 6 mercury. I bought a lower unit to replace the one I trashed last year. When I got it the seller showed me that it shifted into f-n-r. As in my manual it said that I had to turn the shift shaft just in the forward position with the throttle just out of neutral. I installed the lower unit and when I started it ,it took off forward. I tried to put it in reverse it still goes forward.Would this also cause it to be hard to start. Roger

Re: lower unit problems

sure sounds like you have the shift shaft in the wrong position, and I think it should be in reverse when being slid back together, just did the same thing, slid my 95hp back together and it went into forward and would not come back out. shift shaft was in wrong position. good luck

Re: lower unit problems

On my 71 inline 6 I tried neutral and forward. I couldn't ever get it right so someone told me reverse and in 10 minutes it was in and working correctly.

Roger, I always install the gearcase when it and the control are in neutral.
