lower unit question...need an opinion

I have a 1977 Johnson 140 hp outboard, I went to change the gear lube in the lower unit and when I drained it, it came out as a dark opaque gray color.

I don't remember the last time I changed it,it's been a while, but is this normal? If not what could be causing this?

Any help would be great. Thanks

When you let the drained fluid out did it separate after sitting ???

I actually only let it sit for about 20 min, and it looked the same as when it came out. That might not have been long enough
