I am looking to purchase a rebuild kit for a Mercruiser pre-Alpha drive. The kit contains: gears, bearings carrier, seals, washer and cover nut. What is this cover nut? The nut that holds the pinion gear onto the driveshaft?

Tony,
BUY a Rebuilt Drive.......
Those Parts will run you More than the outdrive....
Your outdrive is Now Parts for Other outdrives....
You'd have Better Luck buying a used unit on ebay.....

You Already said that your man Showed you Bad Gears,+ You Thought they looked Fine.....
You're in over your head on this 1... Let a PRO build an outdrive For you..... You Need the Reliability that comes with that...... Outdrives are Very Precise Machines..... Longevity comes from getting it Right the 1st time.....

Your not going to find All that you Need in a Kit...
Good Luck...

Re: Lower Unit Rebuild Kit

Is it the shimming that makes the rebuild on the outdrives so difficult? I disassembled the entire lower unit and it didn't seem too bad. What else would I need that I didn't mention in the kit? The kit has the gears, bearings, bearing carrier, etc...I am fairly mechanically inclined, I just rebuilt an entire engine from top to bottom. I bought this outdrive on ebay, don't know if I would do that again........

Boy bondo.....don't get po'd. I am just looking to save some money here......I brought the drive to 2 different places, the first guy who told me the upper gears were shot also told me the lower unit was older than it really is. I am just looking for some advice, which I know you already gave me. Thanks.

Tony, I'm Not POed, You've done one *ell of a job on that old Grady...
I'm just Trying to let you know, You're going to Spend Way More, Trying to keep that outdrive Running.... With All the Parts you need Now, Plus the Pitted Gears in the other half, You've got a Couple of Cases/Housings you can trade off for other boat parts..... The Parts you need will Cost More than the $1500. that you can Buy the Rebuilt Outdrive for.....
And, the Reliability Thing..... Wouldn't you Rather be Fishing out on the Sound, Instead of Working on the Grady.... It takes Many Special Tools... AND, Special Knowledge to Build a Reliable Outdrive.... I was Born with a Wrench in my hand,+ I send my rebuilds out to a Friend who works on Outdrives EveryDay.....

Tony, I'm Sure that You can Reassemble Your Outdrive,+ It'll Work just Fine..... But, I wouldn't want it running on the back of My boat...Miles from the Trailer,+ No Prop Turn is a Really Bad Feeling.... Been there, Done that... Now I Send Them Out......Pretty Close, Is Not Good Enough in Outdrives....

Thanks bondo,....I understand exactly what you're saying about the reliability thing. I guess I need to make a decision......If I go with the rebulit outdrive my boating season is probably over this year.... :(

Re: Lower Unit Rebuild Kit

bondo, I have a friend in the business that said he would give me a hand with this. I know you advised against it and I have not decided to go ahead with it yet. I just want your opinion on this kit: http://www.amarket.com/imgear1c.htm

That's about what I would have to pay at NAPA....
I'd call that a Real Good Price...

Re: Lower Unit Rebuild Kit

Is there anything not included in the kit that you would recommend?
