I need to remove the lower unit on a 93 Johnson 25 HP and cannot seem to figure out how to disconnect the shift shaft to drop the lower unit. Motor is a J25TELETS tiller handle motor.

There should be 4 bolts, and 1 nut/washer holding on the lower unit. Remove the nut/washer first, unscrew the remaining 4 bolts equally, but leave them hanging in the threads a little bit. Then remove the water intake screens, and unscrew the two brass fittings on the shift rod. Then use a pair of needle nose pliers and slide the upper brass fitting up the shift rod. Then carefully remove the plastic holder that was underneath the brass fitting. Shift the gearshift in forward position. The upper brass nut should be removable then. Lower the lower unit slowly. Good Luck... Bob

I believe all you need to do is disconnect the shift rod lever (#34) from the upper shift rod (#36) ... inside the motor cover. How easy that is to get to, I don't know ... sorry.
