Well I have the shift linkage disconnected from the shift arm, and all the bolts free, in fact, the lower unit is dropped about an inch, but now its hung up on something else....

Anyone know what I could be catching on? I can't see a thing, but its solidly hung up...

Alright, its definitely not the shifter linkage... Can I pry on the thing? It seems like its the driveshaft thats stuck. But isn't it just splined?

You didn't mention removing the anode just above the prop; there is another bolt up there to be removed before the LU will come off.

In addition to the 4 large visible bolts, you will find there are two additional bolts that must be removed for the lower to drop. Any chance you missed one? One is visible from the underside. Also, remove the trim tab and check under there for the 6th. bolt.

Just dropped my 77 140hp this morning. make sure you get the other bolts as mentioned, 6 total, and make sure you can move the shift lever easily to determine that it's disconnected. mine was a paid to disconnect the shifter shaft but once done slid out without much issue. if still hanging up i'd pry lightly, maybe the o-ring on the driveshaft is broken or getting stuck

Re: Lower Unit Removal Problem 78 Evinrude 150

I had all 6 bolts, I have the manual, but it says the dern thing should just pop right off... I ended up firing the engine for about 5 seconds, it was enough to pop the driveshaft out. The splines have a slight amount of wear which must of been what was grabbing.

Thanks for the help guys!
