I am trying to remove the lower unit on a 1972ish 6 hp Evinrude. When i try to seperate the lower unit it only drops about a 1/2 inch. It seems that the shift rod is holding it. I can see what looks like srews on the shift rod, but they are to hard to get to and dont believe it is entended to be loosened anyway. What is holding, and what do i need loosen to get it of. My gear oil is milky so i what to find out where it is leaking. Also i cannot find the serial number on this motor. It seems the original plate has been off for a while. Where else can I find it?

Re: Lower Unit Removal...

If you can see the brass coupler on the shift rod between the lower unit and the mid-section, and it has two screws, you must remove one of them to separate the lower unit.

Look for a convex plate on top of the engine block, about the size of a quarter. It will have numbers stamped into it. If there are two sets of numbers, the first will be the model number. If there is only one set, it will be serial number.

Hope this helps.

I did remove the lowest brass coupler and it will still not seperate. Do i really need to pull or lightly beat it off?

You just want to remove the screw. The screw must come completely out of the coupler, though.

Spray a little WD40 on the coupler, Spread the section of the coupler that has the screw removed very slightly and gently with a screwdriver. Then see if it will lift off. Expert xcusme posted a sketch here: web page

Re: Lower Unit Removal...

Thanks that worked perfectly! Checked out the water pump and completely shot. Rubber pieces everywhere! There was also what looked like coffee grounds on the top of the lower unit, really nasty stuff, im thinking built up carbon? It wasn't in the water pump, but when I lowered the lower unit it was everywhere. Hope this isn't bad. Just bought this for 300 bucks, and the guy said he just replaced it and maintained it religously. Looks like it wasnt touched since the motor was built! He's full of s@#*! Just ran it in the good ol' rubber trash can and noticed no water coming out. Then after about 10 min of waiting stopped it, and noticed milky gear oil..huummmm.

Got those numbers..I think. This number was on what looked like the thermo- 311239.

These number's were on the side of the engine block on what looked like anifreeze plug on a car; top number-6602E; bottom number E08208. Hope this is the right stuff, gonna need it at the boat shop to order new parts tomorow.

Yes, 6602E is the model number. It is for a 1966 Evinrude 6 cylinder.
6 Cylinder Evinrude Models

Mine is a 65 and it still runs well. The second number is the serial number which is unique to your motor. If you go to a dealer for parts, have both numbers and you will get what you should.

You can view the parts diagrams for the 1968 models at the BRP site: The 1968 is almost identical to yours.
Parts Diagrams

Re: Lower Unit Removal...

Thanks alot EZ. Have you ordered parts from BRP, or should I just go the the shop and order them? Which would be better. If BRP, what 1968 model should I go with?

Re: Lower Unit Removal...

BRP is short for Bombardier Recreational Products. They are owner of the old OMC. Anyway, the site is just there to help customers find part numbers and names so they know what to order from the dealers. They don't retail the parts themselves.

Re: Lower Unit Removal...

You will want the gearcase seal kit and the waterpump kit for the 1966 model. Give them the model number and serial number that you found on the side of the block: MOD 6602E, SN E08208. You start with OMC/BRP parts which will come with some directions. If they don't have instructions, ask the parts department for them.
