Lower Unit Removal

1989 120 hp johnson,, was wondering if anyone could explain how to disconnect the shifter rod so i can remove the lower unit, or is it not necessary ,,can i just unbolt the lower unit and remove it ?

you have to remove the linkage. (you should have the manual)
