I have a 1973 evinrude 85 horse. I have removed all the bolts and it will only drop down about 1/8th of an inch. Need to find out where and how to disconnect shift linkage. Thanks in advance Sealegs 56

Re: lower unit removal

this may not help you but on my 1985 120 johnson the is a pin or screw at the bottom of the powerhead that needs to come out.

Re: lower unit removal

Sealegs, hello and hope this might help you. Not sure if it is the same setup as mine. But if you look where the shift-rod lever is on the rightside of the motor (standing behind it)you will see where it moves the shift-rod shaft back and forth. If you look on the shift rod, you will see a safety pin. Pull that pen out. When you pull that pen out ( do note this is all done on the upper portion of the motor by the powerhead) move the lever forward or back until you see it release the Shift-rod. Bye all means. insure you rebolt the lower unit before you you do this. You do not want that unit to hit the floor. Then proceed to take it out and be carefull when you do take it out. You do not want to bend the shift rod taking it out.
