I'm trying to remove the lower unit on my 73 Johnson 25 HP to change my water pump I have taken the four bolts out and the big bolt in the back and removed the 2 bolts to the rod connecter and I can not figure out why the lower unit is not dropping do I have to unloosen the crankshaft nut

It should now slide off with nothing more to " unloosen "--------But if this motor has been neglected the driveshaft and crankshaft splines may be jammed with rust.------Various methods are used to pull the assembly apart.

Can't speak to your specific one, but my 70hp has two bolts aft, one being underneath the trim tab.

No such thing as a trim tab on that 25 HP motor !-----The OP has removed the bolts as needed on his motor.

Does the drive shaft drop with the lower unit

My drive shafts always came out with the lower units dropped on every motor that I ever had, and I used to have a 25 Johnson in the past from the early 70's too. Like what was said though, rust could be holding the drive shaft in the power head.

Sorry for bothering you all I just got the motor from a guy for 550$ and he said he rebuild the lower unit it's been fine the few times I have taken it on the River until the other day it started smoking badly and Quit on me and everyone is telling me to replace the water pump so I tried calling the local shops and see the would do it and they said that my motor was to old for them to work on it so I'm trying to figure it out on my own

I have clearly indicated that there was nothing else to undo / loosen in post #2 and post #4.----I believe the driveshaft is jammed in the crankshaft.----Rust is what jams it !!!

How would I go about getting it out if its rusted in there I'm thinking I can turn the motor upside down and spray PB blaster up in there and see if it won't break free
