I am repairing the lower unit of my 35 Evenrude. How do I pull the shifter bushing to replace the o-ring beneath it?

Run a 5/16-NC tap in there and pull it out .-------Or 1/4" threaded rod with a nut with hex well rounded off and pull it out.

I think we went over this some time ago.... shift rod needs to come out first by openning the gearcase to disconnect the shift rod :-( or did I get this wrong...

You got it wrong.-----With careful work habits you would not have to remove anything from the gearcase I think.

Thanks, I can unscrew the shifter rod and remove. But, can I pull the bushing without damage so I can reinstall?

Remove shift rod.----Carefully run a 5/16-NC tap in there ( upside down ) so no chips fall in.----Pull bushing out.----Replace o-ring and bushing .-----Done.

I doubt you can drive the bushing out with a hammer on a 1979 model 35 HP gearcase !!!
