I have an old 1969 50 hp Mercury. I can't get it out of forward. Don't understand how lift is connected to forward gear.
Hope this makes sense, I am a newbie. Any suggestions. thanks.

What do you mean "Don't understand how lift is connected to forward gear."? When did it shift properly last. What have you done that might have an impact on the problem?

What is your setup....remotes, tiller handle, lying on it's side on a shipping crate?

What is the prop able to do....ratchet cw and hold firm enough to turn the crankshaft in the ccw direction....won't move?

I figured it out thanks. I just disconnected the lock dog in the lower unit that locks it down when it reverse. Works fine if you don't have to stop real quick, but i just put a piece of chain around it when I'm running and when I reverse it works very nice. This is an old project work boat. I am a retired Commercial shrimper and Tug boat captain.
