As suggested I'm starting my own thread.
Recently purchased 2004 Johnson 90hp 4 stroke J90PX4SR . On her maiden voyage I heard a clunk then some clanking from the lower unit. Limped home, couldn't get past idle or it made a slipping screechy noise. Trailered it and played with the throttle. Sounded fine then. At low rpm that is. If I eased into the throttle it ran great, until 3000. then it shrieked and tried to die. If I backed out of the gas it wouldn't die and I could throttle back up. Changed the prop. Same result. Drained the lower unit and it was silvery in color with some moderate flaking. Heard it may be the dog but I'm no outboard guy. Guess I will be now. What should I expect when I open the gearcase?

A blown up lower unit! :) Seriously the "silvery" oil is minute bits of steel. Something is ground up. Do it right, replace all bearings and the gear set. Carefully check the inside for any problems like bearing areas that may not hold or have damage. Look for any small holes from bits thrown against the inside of the unit.

If you're going to do this yourself and not take it to a dlr, get an OEM Factory Service Manual.

I'm not planning on attacking this one quite yet. Considering how smooth the prop spins when engine off, is there anything inside that can be saved?

If it's defineatly the l/u the only way you can tell is to take it apart.

It is getting tore down tomorrow or the day after. I guess I was just hoping it was a spun bearing or something at least not crazy expensive.

So the guy says planetary bearings and driveshaft. I'm getting hopeful that it's not a paperweight.

no he's not a dealer, just a local guy who is the owner bait shop for 30 + years. I was confused by the planetary bearings as well, he came well recommended. As long as he knows what he's talking about.

Ok so the mechanic states that the bearings need to be pressed on then frozen to insert correctly. Does this make sense to anyone. Also said cost for parts and assembly will be 2000. is this outrageous or not.
