Lower Unit Seal Help - Pics

Hi,

I have a 1962 Evinrude Starflite IV 75HP. I inherited it from my great uncle.

I have cleaned it up and got it running but after water testing I have discovered the lower unit oil has changed colour slightly.

The drain/fill plug seals looked to be in perfect condition so I didn't bother replacing them. I didn't touch the propeller seal.

I do not have alot of knowledge with outboards. This is the first I have ever owned.

Are the drain/fill plugs and propeller seal the only places where seawater can get in?

I can't find a propeller seal in the iboats store. I found this kit, which contains a bunch of seals.

Can someone please identify them for me? Does this kit have a propeller seal? I can see waterpump gasket and seal.

This is the propeller seal.

It has 4 bolts on the outside that have O-rings on them. O-rings are easy to get and I will be able to replace these. I need help finding the oil seal in the middle. Is there anything else behind the oil seal that I should replace?

I don't want to get seawater in the lower unit and destroy it.

This is the drive shaft propeller seal for a 75HP 1960-62 manual shift.

I have the electric shift. Does anyone know if this seal is suitable for the electric shift models aswell?

Difficult to asses the condition of the oil from your photo. It may darken a little but it should remain "clear and bright" Any milkiness is due to (emulsified) water.

It's an electric shift so I guess will use a type C oil, not the Hi Vis type. But get that verified!

You'll find a parts diagram HERE (but maybe not for your exact model number) that will enable you to identify all the seals, gaskets and O rings involved.

First glances suggest that the prop shaft seals for electric and manual shift may be different but with the above parts lists and the Sierra catalog you should be able to sort it all out.

You can see the oil that I used in the background of the photo. It is genuine OMC Premium Blend, which has superceeded the Type C oil. On the back of the packet it said "suitable for all old electric shift outboards".

That parts diagram page is extremely useful! It has all the original part numbers.

The seal kit from the iboats store contains the following part numbers.

(1) 18-0173 Oil Seal - replaces O.E. # 313283
(1) 18-0174 Oil Seal - replaces O.E. # 326716
(1) 18-0886 Lower Gearcase Gasket - replaces O.E. # 307099
(2) 18-4248 Washer - replaces O.E. # 311598
(1) 18-7115 O-Ring - replaces O.E. # 302588
(1) 18-7118 O-Ring - replaces O.E. # 305242
(4) 18-7120 O-Ring - replaces O.E. # 307853, 322598
(1) 18-7152 O-Ring - replaces O.E. # 307082 Gearcase head O ring (63)
(1) 18-7428 O-Ring - replaces O.E. # 307103 Gearcase halves seal (55)

As you can see only the last two matched up with the parts diagram.

I'm not going to spend $25USD for O-rings and parts that I'm not sure about.

I can get O-rings in Australia, and I can make my own gaskets. What I really need is the oil seal on the propeller.

It is part number 307088 and is not in the iboats store. Can anyone help?

Just found out that the oil seal part number changed from 0307088 to 0313283.
