I am in the process of replacing the seals in the lower unit of a 1961 10 HP johnson.

Sealoc manual mentions a special tool used to pull the seal from where the shift lever and drive shaft go. I do not have this special tool.

Are there workarounds to this by using other tools?

Any idea where I can get this special tool. It looks like some kind of bearing puller from the picture in the book.

Thanks for the help.

When i replaced the seals in my 1959 5.5, I used a small offset screw driver to pry them out. In doing the propshaft seal, I had to grind the ninety degree bend down some so as not pry on the lip of the bearing head.

Auto parts stores have a seal puller for about 10-12 bucks. Worth every penny. Took me a couple hours to get one out, bought the tool took less than a minute. Took longer to get it out of the package than it did to take the seal out.

Yes, use a seal puller where for the drive shaft seal.

for the shifter seal, you have to remove the bushing. Search this forum and it will tell you how to make and use one. It's real easy. basically, you get a 5/16" steel rod about a foot long and grind one end down to a 1/4": bevel and use it to tap the bushing out from the opposite side... Search for pics and a better explanation. I made one out of the metal from an old baby's crib! (Shhh, dont tell my kid!)
