Hello guys. I'm trying to replace the seals in the lower unit of my 1970 20hp Johnson. There are a couple of seals and O-rings I can't seem to get to. For one, is the seal in the gear case head. What does it take to get the old one out? My manual only states "if you replace the seals, grease appropriately". There are others but this one I'm trying right now. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
John T.

If I remember correctly, the seals are in the head assembly. Take the head out and you remove the seals by driving them out from the rear of the head.

Hi John I have a '66 20hp myself and just resealed it a while back. All you reall need o do the job is a regular, automotive oil seal puller which you can get at any auto store for about $10. The trick is to get the old seals out without damaging their soft aluminum housings. They can be stubborn and you may have to resort to clipping, snipping them out. Just be patient, cuss as needed and they will come out eventually. Here are some links to several vids that can walk you through the job. You can get a complete reseal kit right here at iboats for about $25. You'll also need a tube of 3M 847 gasket sealant, or similar product such as Permatex Ultra Black to use on the spaghetti seal, gearcase bolts, as well as around the perimeter of the oil seals themselves.
