i have an 89 evinrude 140 it starts right up and idles good if i put it in gear and give it gas it revs up and sounds good but then it tapers off and cuts out only if i really get on it though. my last trip from last season this happend and while i was on water i filled the tank with fresh fuel(it was really low i thought i was suckin air) and same problem.i removed the check valve its not stuck and put it back in. i had to hand prime the ball to get the boat home if i kept pumping it would run fine. when i stopped the ball would go soft and motor would die. and that was my last trip last season.this season checked the fuel filter water seperator and didnt see any thing, i turned the ball backwards and pumped it in an attempt that if there was dirt in line blow it back into tank (the tank is fiberglassed under deck)to no avail.so i removed the fuel line from the water seperator and hooked it to an external 6 gal tank.i got a new ball but used about three feet of old line (tank, ball, checkvalve, motor).i examined plugs they look ok. drained the carb bowls they were full of fuel i didnt see any discoloration, i used the same fuel from inside the tank looks and smells ok to me. its from last season. i dont see or hear any leaks when priming,(execpt for a hissing from inside the carburateor area) it ran a little longer but same thing. so i put sea foam in it 1 can to 6 gals ran for 15 wait 15 ran for 15 and thats where im at now. i did notice water escaping from around the place where lower unit bolts to shaft when the muffs are on. no oil is in the water thats escaping.could i have had the hose turned up to high and blew somthing out? is this normal or do you think my problem is comming from lower end? carbureators? fuel lines? all the above ? the stripers are runn and im itchin to get er out.this is my first motor and im kinda new with all this so please bear with me. sorry to write a novel

Re: lower unit seals?

Sounds like a fuel supply issue. Can be an air leak on the suction side of the fuel pump, tank not vented properly, failed anti-suction valve, fuel pump failure, etc. The clue is running continues while pumping the ball. Water and water from vent holes is normal and has nothing to do with the fuel issue. Check for fuel line cracks, clamps not tight first. An OEM shop manual would provide an organized check list.

BTW, when did the motor run properly last?
