Lower Unit sizing

I have a lower unit (btw its for sale if you're in the market and area) from a 1988 Evinrude 140. Does anyone know what other sizes and or years it will fit on? I already had it on an 88 Johnson, so I know it will work with that.

As a side note: Anyone know the answer to the same question regarding the wiring harass and controls? Thanks.

Re: Lower Unit sizing

It would be better to advertise that your control will work on many motors from 1977 up rather than 1973 because of the cables.

The lower unit will fit most V4 motors with the same length driveshaft and the same length and style of shift rod. from 1978 to the mid 1990's. It will also fit the V6, but the gear ratios are different.

OK... I didn't know anything about gear ratios. Does that mean even trying to put it on a 150 (V6) will mean some kind of major modifications? How hard will it be to compensate for these "gear ratios" being off? and what are they anyway? Thanks a lot guys, this is exactly why these forums are so great.

Re: Lower Unit sizing

1988 120 125 and 140 TL is 13:26 or .50
the 1988 140 TX or CX (25") is 12:27 or .44

1988 200 and 225 have gear ratios of 14:26 or .54.

The difference between the 14 TX and the V6 is about 20%, so you would at least have to buy a new prop. If you did not know what you had, you would drive yourself nuts trying to compensate.
