Hey Guys, Could you help me with this problem?
I have a 96' 225 mariner. My problem is, when I start out to full throttle, it is fine until I get to about 4500RPM's. It then goes into a full rev. Its like I went to neutral. I thought it was a prop hub slipping. I changed it and it still does the same thing. It is fine until it just goes on plane. A guy told me it was a "clutch dog" going bad. I guess its in the lower unit. Have any of you guys had a similar problem? And if so, is it repairable as a "shade tree mechanic"?? Please give me any experience you may have.

If it were the clutch dog, it would make a bunch of noise(ratcheting sound), and as the RPM's came down, it would drop back in gear. Is it cavitating? Have you changed any condition of the motor in regards to, mounting, trimming up, ect.....  :D

Re: Lower unit slips at 4500RPM's

BushCat,
It will go back into gaer but not until it goes under 3000RPM's. I havent done anything new. I changed the prop hub when It first happened. I was told that the clutch dog will go bad from going into gear alot. I do that ALOT. I do alot of hover fishing over wrecks and I am in and out of gear at least 150x a day.
The only thing I noticed was that the cone that is on the back of the prop is now missing.
I am taking it apart tonite. Is there anything I need to know before I do?? Thanks...
