When you say "released linkage" did you slide the upper half of the connecting nut up the shift rod, and remove the plastic cone shaped keeper that is underneath the nut?

there was not a plastic cover ,just a 1/2 nut that threaded into 9/16 female .they were behind the two black plastic ciovers on side of lower unit

This is not a cover.

Under the upper portion of that nut on the shift rod. There is a small cone shaped plastic keeper. Take a pair of pliers and slide it up the shifter shaft to expose the keeper underneath it. The keeper has a vertical slit in it, use a fingernail, or small screwdriver to open the slit and remove it.

Could be the stud is corroded and stuck in the hole. Spray with penetrant oil, and use wedges, like wooden door framing wedges to pry open.

Could be the drive shaft splines are stuck in the drive socket.
Best way to is to hang the whole motor upside down and spray penetrant oil into any gap you can manage between the mid section and lower unit. Take your time, and you may get it to come out. I have heard of people who had to have a welder cut a window into the midsection, and work to get it loose. Then weld up the window. Hope you get it the easy way...Hope this helps.

If it came down an inch, it isn't the shaft. And the stud is infamous for siezing in the hole, but when it does, you don't get it to drop down at all.
But I don't know what it is either.

when you took the black lock ferral out ..did the top connector on the shift rod come off also..when I did mine it hung up just on the bottom of the rod...I had to raise the lower end and drop it down to break it free of the rod...just a guess is all...
