Here's my problem! My 85hp merc inline 4, I think is a 1977 according to the ser. # 4846571
The lower unit is history I believe it blew a forward gear (reverse still worked) SO instead of spending over $1100 CND. for new parts alone I was able to buy a used lower from a marine mechanic that deals in used parts.
Now here is the dilema: this driveshaft on the used lower (I believe from a 65) had the driveshaft spring loaded preload pin on the top of the shaft the mechanic said it would go in even though my 85hp unit didn't have this.
But when I went to reinstall either it was to long or something I couldn't get it indexed so I cut it off (oops) apprently this was the wrong thing to do? Everything went on fine, refilled unit with 80-90 weight lube and fired it up on land with the earmuffs on. I shut it down to recheck the the gear oil level and when I opened the drain nothing but cream colored oil came out! obviously a waterleak into my gearcase some where? I pressume from the O-ring under the waterpump because it was not in wate it couldn't get into the fill or vent plugs or through the prop shaft? So in conclusion when I removed the lower unit again (now I can do it in 10 Min.) I took it to anothe mechanic to get seal s put in he said cutting the pin off was a bad way to go!
Do I need this pin to preload my straightcut gears in this lower unit? (how can I remove and replaace this pin & spring?)and I see my waterpump lower housing has a smaller diameter where it goes into the bearing carrier I also had to change the plate and rubber grommet where the large copper water tube goes into the lower unit and I noticed the back bolt on the pump housing was stripped whats the best way to fix this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
