Lower unit swap

All,
I have a 1988 Johnson V4 140 (Looper) and recently blew the gear case on it. I'm looking to replace my current lower unit with a bulkier one. I have found a few 20" Johnson V6 lower units that I'm interested in. I guess my question is, as long as the spline count matches on the drive shafts, I shouldn't have an issue right? Should I have any issues with the shift shaft?
I realize the prop shaft will have a different number of splines.
TIA

Re: Lower unit swap

Some of those came with the V-6 lower unit.--------------May have to change and set up the shift rod.--------V-6 lower units from the 60 degree motors may not fit.

The V6 lower unit is a 1990, I believe those were not the 60 degree ones. I could be wrong though

Re: Lower unit swap

A V-6 unit will bolt up but will not work as the large V-4 looper gearcase is a different gear ratio..

V-6 lower unit works if the correct prop is fitted !

The V-6 unit even with prop dropped 2 pitchs is a dog on hole shot on the V-4 loopers.......been there and fixed that!

A friend of mine had a V6 lower unit on his Johnson V4 130. It originally came on the motor. He had a 14x21 SS prop, and even on a 20 Cape Horn CC that thing would jump out of the water.

Re: Lower unit swap

With all that being said, does anyone know where I may beagle to find a large hub (4 5/8 in) V4 unit for sale? Maybe then I could avoid the hole shot issues while still bulking up on what I currently have. Only ones I've found are $1700+, a little out of my price range.

The V-6 gearcase is a 1:87 ratio and the V-4 looper is 2:25. They use the same case just different gears. Find you a V-6 with the high altitude gear set as that what the big case V-4's have .....
