Lower Unit Testing?

Is there any way to physically check to see if a lower unit is functioning properly while the lower unit is taken off the motor? I have my lower unit off on my 1977 70 HP Evinrude and I have a "suspicion" something may be wrong with the gears inside. If I pull the shift rod into say forward, what should be experienced when spinning the prop? What about neutral? Reverse?

I am basically looking for signs of proper operation when the lower unit is off.

Any help would be great!

Other than shifting back, and forth, there is'nt much you can check. Why do you feel something may be wrong? What does the oil look like? You can remove the prop shaft bearing carrier, and snap-ring's, this will give you a look at the gear's, if nned be.

Well, maybe I'm just paranoid but while driving through this channel at slow wake speed I felt a "thump" as if the motor hit a log or something.. Upon checking it out I found no log and no apparent damage..

I'm just paranoid I guess and wanted to know if there was some way of testing a lower unit.
