lower unit tool

My '81 50hp tapped a rock when I put it in reverse and then didn't want to start. Feels like the engine is in a bind even in neutral. LU will not come out of gear. When I turn the prop by hand it has a metallic clunking sound. Not scared to take it apart but I am sure that there is a special tool to take the end of the LU off (where the prop shaft goes in) as it appears that the round bracket is screwed in. Am I looking at this right and is there a nice way to take this out without the special tool. Thanks guys. I do have another lower unit that will fit on there but I need to reseal it first and I want to fix this one.

See an exploded view at http://shop.evinrude.com/
The bearing carrier does not screw in, it pulls straight out. Four bolts hold it in. After removing the bolts, pull it out with a harmonic balancer puller and All-thread rods.

It requires a honkin' big pair of snap ring pliers to go beyond that.

Re: lower unit tool

Thanks a ton. Have the puller and the snap ring pliers. I guess it's "Away I go!"
