ok, you guys have been awesome help. I just love getting to know my motor and the majority of things ive learnt, i have from you people here. Thankyou for that. I do however have a problem. Quite simple im sure. I re-installed a new impeller and all was fine, so i thought. My donk now PEE's water better than ever, but im in drive constantly. I did the operation in neutral, now when im in neutral the prop is prolly spinning about 200 rpm's. Not fast, but definitly spinning. How do i get this back to neutral. Something to do with the drive shaft or what? thankyou heaps.

Sounds like the shift shaft got turned while the LU was off. If it was fine before disassembly, the shift shaft probably got turned in the process of reassembly. Make sure the controls and the LU are both in true neutral before reassembly. I like to put both in reverse as it seems to lock in and align better. May just need to adjust the shift cable a little to get to true neutral.

Good luck!

I hace had better luck reinstalling the unit by placeing the engine and unit in the same gear as you can turn the drive shaft to line up thr splines

If you run it in neutral, the prop will spin a little. If you are unsure, stop engine, then make sure prop will spin both directions.... confirming it is in neutral. Friction is making it spin.....

Correct..

That will give you neutral. The shifter should also be in neutral
BTW... See if you can catch up with JASONJ member no 3950 on the merc forum section. He is, like just about all iboats members, a real helpful bloke.
He has a motor close to yours in age and size, and is a perfectionist with a passion for Mercs and a wealth of knowledge.
Jason's site http://70silverline.250free.com/silverline.html
