I changed my lower unit oil 2 weeks ago but didn't replace the washer for the drain (only place I saw a washer. Shouldn't there be some for the vent and oil level?). Anyway, can I just use any washer that will fit from a hardware store or do I have to get one specially for that?

Re: Lower unit washers

There should be atleast 2 holes for which to drain and fill the gear oil. They are both about the size of a Dime and are flathead screws. One near the top of the gearcase and one just above the skeg.

You cannot add enough oil to the gearcase unless you vent the gearcase. Fill from the bottom until it comes out the top.

As for the seals...they must be replaced each time you change the gear oil...and yes..they are special seals(washers)

TMD
