lower unit water intake

Hey guys picked up a motor that someone opened up the water intake in the lower by cracking the fins off.. Any one have a fix for this with out taking the two peice apart? willpost pics when i get a chance

Motor?Drive? The fins are primarily there to keep the big pieces out of the pump.
Maybe a piece of rabbit cage wire?

Hey jerry its on the lower unit the motor is 72 70 hp.. two peice lower it doea not have the plastic filter in the intake. .

To do anything your gonna have to take it apart.

Ok so it sounds like i may hace to pull it apart.. I wounder if the local welder can tack some aluminum to it to remake the fins.. Also i kbow u can reuse and nake ur own gaskets but has anyone tried to reuse or make the rubber seal that seals the two peice up?

The rubber seal is simply a correctly sized O-Ring. If you don't need to take that lower unit apart and if it is not leaking, don't take it apart.

Take a plate of thin aluminum and drill multiple 1/8 inch holes in it then epoxy it over the intake. Sand the paint off the lower and sand the plate where the epoxy will be.

Really though, unless you are boating in weed clogged or chunky water the screen is not necessary, neither are the fins.

Hey frank do u have any pics . The po have that pipe strap stuff in the opening and rivited to one side.. I removed to replace with better or repair.
