Two part question: I have watched several videos on checking the water pumps on my twin 150 hp Mercs. Looked very easy so I tried it on one motor. Came apart easy. When I slide the shaft up into the motor it stops about one inch before the lower unit comes into contact with the motor. ????

Second question: With the props turning different directions on twin motors does that mean that the water pump impellers on each motor spin in opposite directions?

Re: Lower unit / water pump

The shaft splines are not lining up need to turn it slightly to get it to seat.

The water pump will turn in which ever direction the shaft turns.

Two things must lign up for the lower unit togo back into place. As the other post said the splines must align, also the water tube that goes from the pump to the motor must lign up for the lower unit to go all the way up.
Good luck.

If you have a helper, it's much easier if they will wiggle the flywheel back and forth while you are pushing up. It's almost always either the driveshaft not be aligned, or the water pump tube, like Hack said.
