Hey Folks,

I drained the oil in the lower unit of my '68 18hp evin(model 18803M) and discovered a small amount of water. The gear oil was intact(brown not creamy or grey) and the water was in droplet form. Finding this I dissasembled the lower unit to visually check the damage. Suprisignly everything is in great shape. I was going to reassemble everything, but wanted to know if I should replace all bearings, seals, gaskets and o-rings knowing that somehow water entered the lower unit. I also noticed in the cavity forward of the water pump housing in the lower unit, it was full of sand. I cleaned it all out, but was concerned if I should be looking for specific damage elsewhere. The impeller is to be replaced before I reassemble.

Thanks for the help

Emeral14

Well since ya' got it apart and yer there, may as well change out the seals and orings.

Check the clutch dog lobes and gear lobes since your in there. They will probably have some wear on them but the corners should be fairly sharp.....probably rounded over some from use.

Clean it out good and put a new impeller in it also.

Check your dealer for a lower unit "seal kit" for that motor.

Re: Lower Unit Water

Make sure that you replace the seals on the fill & drain plugs. Often that is where the water comes from.
