I have a 305 Mercruiser with an Alpha One. Yesterday while boating, I hit a rock or something for a split second and damaged the prop a bit. I immediately put throttle in neutral position and started to raise lower unit. I then proceeded to put throttle in forward gear. The motor just reved up as if in neutral. I then tried reverse gear and the same thing happened. I thought maybe the hub in the prop slipped. I replaced prop with a different one and tried shifting again. same thing happened. Does anyone have any ideas what could have happened. A friend of mine thought drive shaft but I would think a weaker link then that would go first. Thanks for any help.

Nope, a broken lower shaft or the pinion gear broken off the end of the shaft

Is this easy to fix? Can an average person do the repair?
