I am a newbie, I have a 99 Mecury 60 hp. The guy berfor me stored it with oil in the lower unit. I didn't realize this until I went to change it at the end of the season. How much damage do you think the lower unit has?

No one can answer that without tearing it down I had a friend do that same thing and instead of tearing it down and checking it for damage he filled it once and ran it drained the unit refilled it and it lasted 5 or 6 year If it was mine I never would have gotten a ride and it would have been junk hows your luck

I am embarassed to say that I did this with a motor I bought some years ago--never occurred to me that someone would store it empty. I took it out for a test run at the first opportunity without checking the LU oil--never again. But, I have observed no ill effects, and no metal in the oil in several changes. I guess there is always some residue of oil left in there. And in my case I only used it for an hour or so. Good luck!

Yep..go ahead and use it (with oil of course!)...If no water came out, the residule oil might have done a good'nuff job...
