Re: lower unit
My manual says to put a 1990 model in forward to remove the lower unit but having it in neutral won't prevent separation. I think it helps reinstallation allowing you to turn the prop or propshaft slightly which will turn the driveshaft allowing reallignment with the powerhead. At least that works for me.

You will have to keep working the LU up and down along with some gentle prying to get the LU off. You probably have some corrosion or dried lubricant on the driveshaft or exhaust tube which is hanging up.

After removal mark the position of the reverse cam lock on the shift shaft. If this is reinstalled in the wrong position you will not be able to shift and/or your reverse tilt locks will not function.

When reinstalling the LU put a light coating of lubricant on the exhaust tube and driveshaft splines. DO NOT put lube on the top of the drivshaft it will cause problems when mating with the crankshaft due to clearances which may cause powerhead or lower unit damage later.
