Lower unit

New user. Sorry if this has been asked before. Is an 1989 Evinrude model E40ELCEC lower unit interchangeable with a 1986 Johnson model J40TELCDE lower unit?

No I believe you need an 88/89-92 lower unit for.your motor. There is a 3 to 4 yr interchange there.

Only a 1988 or older unit will fit on a 1986 model.----89 / 90 / 91 / 92 are different.--------93 to end of production are different again with larger spline on crank end of the driveshaft.
