lower unit

i have 15 horse johnson,,,and want to look at impeller i removes bolts on bottom but how do you disingage the shifting lincage ///???thanks jj

After you remove the screws attaching the gearcase to the exhaust housing, seperate the gearcase from the exhaust housing far enough to expose the shift rod connector. You will see it in the space between the two parts. Remove the upper connector screw. Pull the gearcase staight away from the exhaust housing. This is for an '83 model-don't know if it's changed any over the years.

JJ..... If your 15hp is an older model (1956 etc), there is a plate on the side of the exhaust housing (the hsg between the powerhead and the lower unit). Remove that plate. You'll see a brass shift linkage which connects the upper and lower shift rod with two 3/8" hex head bolts. Remove only one of those bolts.<br /><br />If your 15hp is from 1974 up, dropping the lower unit will allow you to see that shift connector at the very front of the unit.
