lower/upper outdrive joining

I need some advice on where the shift lever should be when joining the upper and lower drive units. Is there only one position that the two pieces will go together. It appears that it is in reverse when pointed straight forward. I am new at all this and this is one of the last things I have to do before I begin the dubious task of replacing the U-joint bellows.
Thanks for any advice.

All the Merc.s I've Ever worked on, Outdrives Or Outboards,.....

Everything Has to be in Forward to assemble, or Disassemble.............
As was said thats foward. Put shifter in foward.. The shift shoe should be straight foward.. Rotate the shift shaft on the lower unit clockwise and at the same time turn the prop counterclockwise and hold it their. Then install the lower to the upper.
